For Vista, they broke all old stuff. So old hardware, and stuff like that, is not working under Vista. I got fed up with the Thunderbird news reader (slow, buggy, poor filters) and installed my old favorite Gravity. It works fine with Vista, as generic Windows programs usually do. The Sourceforge version (2.7) has had some copyrighted functions removed, so for that reason only 2.6 is the better version to get.

So did you forget that, or what? I'm still interested, that hasn't changed. But.... 1) Linux isn't that difficult or complicated. Using Linux isn't exactly brain 2) I have some decent books (my kids tend to give me gift certificates for Christmas and birthday gifts) so the books are a pretty good reference.

I doubt if Microsoft has a way of checking software compatibility with all the solutions people are coming up with to deal with Vista so I can only .... For that reason, "new"[1] operating systems are often buggy as hell, have insufficient support and may have new "features" that can cause problems for users.

Hmm ... service revenue is best maximized by having a buggy OS that is difficult and temperamental to use, so that a constant flow of service calls comes in for it. What if HP decides Vista is so fucked up they can't get their arms around it, and it's making them look like assholes to their customers?
